Rycroft turned to walk away and grabing the door knob to the office, he paused for a moment and glanced over his shoulder one last time.
"You can keep the glasses." He walked out and let the door close behind him.
Nothing was as it seemed when it came to Rycroft. That which had just happened was hard to grasp. It changed Bernard’s thinking radically. Implants or more?
He had suspicions regarding the man, Rycroft, in light of the information he had uncovered in the past few weeks. With the unpredictability of clones it seemed highly improbabable that Hydra would venture down that path so soon without safeguards. It was likely that the ‘man in charge’ had a handeler. He was nothing more than window dressing. The master and chief's reluctance call of the troops deployed in the underground right then and there, only made it harder to believe he still carried the authority to execute the decision.
"But who called the shots?" The blonde bombshell behind the elaborate desk issuing orders to Mr. Beck seemed the most logical candidate.
The alternative theory was just as disturbing. The whole Rycroft cloning thing was just an elaborate rouse to hide the real truth to the inquisitive conspiracy theorists that questioned the mundane’s survivability under such improbable circumstances. Hydra needed a cover story to conceal there was something more to this man Rycroft. A Sensitive perhaps? An Immortal capable of rising from the dead like Lazerus. Under the current circumstances, Bernard was beginning to believe there may be something even more unlikely about this man. An extra terrestrial perhaps. Certainly explained Hydra's hi-tech advancements. And the clue to satisfy his unyielding curiosity may now be in the palm of his hand.
Every Object had a story. Impressions left behind the life of lives of those it came into contact wit. The sunglasses being an integral part of who Rycroft was. All Bernard had to do was tap into that chronicle.
"That was... interesting... Did you get everything you needed? I don't know if you are satisfied with the meeting or not." He reached into his drawer and removed a silver flask, unscrewed the cap, and took a long swig of the contents.
He let off a satisfied gasp and raised the flask as an offering to Bernard. "So what do we do now?"
Bernard waved his hand declining the offer. ”More questions than answers really. Although, nothing compared to those curiosities that must be rattling around in your noggin at the moment. I’ll have to see if Rycroft comes through with his promises. Until then, I don’t fully trust the man. He was almost too compliant. I hope I haven’t put you in any unnecessary danger bringing you into this. Hydra has a knack for burying the truth and anbody that can discredit their lies.”
”I think it’s time I was on my way as well. If all goes well this could be over soon. Maybe then you stand a chance to get this city back.”
